The New York Mets (47-53) split their four-game series with the San Diego Padres (45-57) with a 7-5 loss on Thursday night at Petco Park.
Pitching
Chris Flexen (0-0, -.– ERA) made his Major League debut for the Mets and it did not go well. He only lasted three innings and gave up four runs (three earned), five hits, and four walks while striking out two.
The most eventful part of Flexen’s start was during the first inning when he gave up a home run to his first batter and had two plays at the plate which were challenged. The first play got overturned in the Mets’ favor and the second play stood in the Mets’ favor.
Tyler Pill came in for the fourth and tossed a scoreless inning. He did not fare nearly as well in the fifth inning as he gave up three runs on two walks and a three-run home run.
Josh Edgin was called upon to pitch the sixth and he delivered a perfect inning.
Fernando Salas pitched the seventh and followed suit with a perfect inning of his own.
Erik Goeddel kept the Padres off base as well in the eighth with a 1-2-3 inning accompanied by two strikeouts.
Offense
The Mets faced Luis Perdomo (4-5, 4.71 ERA) of the Padres. They got to him in the first inning as Jay Bruce grounded into a force out to drive in a run.
After the first, Perdomo handled the Mets well for the next five innings before running into trouble in the seventh. Yoenis Cespedes hit a RBI double off him and he was then knocked out of the game with two runners on base. Jose Torres replaced him and gave up three runs (two inherited runs). Asdrubal Cabrera scored on a balk from Torres and Bruce hit a two-run homer off him.
On Deck
The Mets continue their road trip tomorrow as they head to Seattle to open a three-game set with the Mariners. Rafael Montero (1-7, 5.19 ERA) will get the nod for the Mets while Ariel Miranda (7-4, 4.30 ERA) will be on the mound for the Mariners. First pitch is scheduled for 10:10 p.m.
