The New York Mets (48-53) won the opening game of their interleague series with the Seattle Mariners (51-53) by a score of 7-5 on Friday night at Safeco Field.

Pitching:

Rafael Montero (1-7, 5.19 ERA) took the hill for the Mets looking to continue his recent success which included his longest outing of the season in his last start. Montero started off strong as he limited the Mariners to two walks and a solo home run for the first four innings. Things did not go as smoothly in the fifth for Montero though as he was charged with four runs.

Overall Montero only lasted 4 2/3 innings. He gave up three hits, five runs, and five walks while striking out five.

Montero left in the fifth inning with a 4-3 lead, but was temporarily on the hook for the loss after Josh Edgin gave up two inherited runs on one hit in relief for Montero.

After Edgin was unable to get the job done, Hansel Robles was called upon to get the final out of the fifth. He did so and then stayed on for the sixth inning. Robles got the first two outs in the sixth, but was taken out after giving up two consecutive hits.

Jerry Blevins replaced Robles in the sixth to get the final out, which he did successfully. Blevins pitched the seventh as well and got through the inning unscathed.

Paul Sewald came into the game for the eighth and delivered a scoreless frame.

Addison Reed was handed a save opportunity in the ninth and converted it with a scoreless inning for his 19th save of the season.

Offense:

The Mets faced the lefty Ariel Miranda (7-4, 4.30 ERA). Jay Bruce greeted him with a two-run homer in the first inning to begin the scoring for the night.

Seattle native Michael Conforto hit a solo home run in the third inning to put the Mets up 3-0. Later in the inning, Wilmer Flores drove in Asdrubal Cabrera on a sacrifice fly.

The Mets offense was then quiet until the eighth inning when they combined to score three runs. Conforto started off the inning with his second solo shot of the game to tie things up at five runs apiece. Neil Walker then gave the Mets the lead in his first game back from the disabled list with a RBI single. Curtis Granderson followed Walker and extended the Mets lead to 7-5 with a RBI single of his own.

Jacob deGrom (12-3, 3.30 ERA) seeks his ninth consecutive win against Yovani Gallardo (4-7, 5.58 ERA) and the Mariners on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 4:10 p.m.
