The New York Mets (31-39) dropped the second game of their four-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers (46-26) with a 12-0 loss at Dodger Stadium.
Pitching
The Mets sent Robert Gsellman (5-4, 5.50 ERA) to the mound to face off with Brandon McCarthy (5-3, 3.14 ERA) of the Dodgers. Gsellman struggled for his second start in a row as he gave up eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits, three walks, and four home runs in 4 1/3 innings while striking out two. Gsellman has given up six home runs in his last 9 1/3 innings after giving up seven in his previous 63 2/3.
Josh Edgin followed Gsellman and pitched 1 1/3 innings. He gave up four runs on three hits, three walks, and a home run in that stretch.
Fernando Salas also pitched 1 1/3 innings, but fared better than Edgin. He gave up no runs, no walks, and one hit while striking out two. Paul Sewald pitched a scoreless ninth inning to finish out the game.
Offense
The Mets offense was shutout for the night. They only managed four hits and two walks during the game.
It was only the second time the Mets were shutout all season with the last time coming on May 7 against the Miami Marlins.
Notes
The Mets have allowed nine Dodgers home runs in the first two games of this series including three each by Cody Bellinger and Corey Seager.
This is the sixth game in the month of June that the Mets have allowed 10 or more runs.
The Mets are now on pace to finish the season with a 72-90 record, the lowest point they’ve been at this season and since 2014 this late in the season.
From 2015-2016, the Mets gave up double digit runs in a game a combined 10 times. In 2017, they’ve already matched that total with more than half a season still left to play.
On Deck
The Mets continue this four-game series on Wednesday as Tyler Pill (0-2, 3.75 ERA) will make his third start of the season for the big league club. He will be up against Dodgers’ southpaw Rich Hill (3-3, 5.14 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 10:10 PM EST.
