The New York Mets (25-32) split their two-game series with the Texas Rangers (27-32) after a 4-3 victory on Wednesday night at Globe Life Park in Arlington.

Pitching

Zack Wheeler (3-3, 3.72 ERA) took the mound for the Mets a day after Jacob deGrom gave up eight runs in four innings. Wheeler came into the game as the Mets ERA leader among their active starters and continued his solid season with another strong outing at a time when the Mets were in desperate need of one.

After loading the bases with no outs in the first inning, Wheeler escaped with only one run charged against him. That was the only run he gave up all night in his seven innings pitched. He also gave up six hits and three walks while striking out five.

Jerry Blevins came on in the eighth to keep the lead intact, but did not. Blevins got the first two outs, but proceeded to give up a single and home run to Robinson Chirinos which allowed the Rangers to tie the game at three.

Addison Reed shut the door on the Rangers with a perfect ninth inning for his ninth save of the season.

Offense

The Mets offense had the daunting task of facing Rangers ace Yu Darvish (5-4, 3.13). Darvish blanked the Mets for the first three innings as he didn’t allow a baserunner until the fourth.

In the fourth inning, Michael Conforto got hit by a pitch and Jay Bruce hit an umpire-reviewed home run to put the Mets up 2-1.

Darvish rebounded by retiring seven of the next eight Mets, but Bruce struck again in the sixth inning with a solo shot to center field.

The Mets scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth. With runners at first and second, Jose Reyes hit a ball to Rougned Odor who committed an error as he couldn’t throw to second cleanly. Pinch runner Matt Reynolds scored from second on the play to give the Mets a 4-3 lead.

On Deck

The Mets have a day off on Thursday before heading down to Atlanta to take on the Braves for a four-game series. Matt Harvey (4-3, 5.43) will toe the rubber on Friday as he looks to rebound from his poor outing in his last start against Pittsburgh. The Braves will send Julio Teheran (5-4, 5.40 ERA) in opposition. First pitch is scheduled for 7:35 PM.
