The New York Mets (16-16) defeated the San Francisco Giants (11-23) at Citi Field Tuesday night by a score of 6-1.
Pitching:
Zack Wheeler was on the mound for the Mets tonight and was excellent. Wheeler went six innings, allowing one run on two hits, while walking four and striking out four.
The righty easily could have gone out again in the seventh inning, but the Mets played it safe, as Wheeler is on a strict pitch count this season.
In the top of the fourth inning, Buster Posey put up the Giants only run of the game by hitting his fourth home run of the campaign.
Hansel Robles came on for the Mets in the top of the seventh inning and pitched a dominant, clean frame.
Jerry Blevins and Addison Reed then combined to pitch a scoreless inning in the eighth, while Jeurys Familia came on in the ninth inning to put some work in and completed the victory with a scoreless inning of his own.
Offense:
The Mets jumped out to an early lead as they were off to the races tonight.
T.J. Rivera got the Mets started with a single and Jay Bruce followed with a double to right field to put runners on second and third with only one out.
Neil Walker was up next and made the Giants pay by hitting a triple past a diving Gorkys Hernandez that went all the way to the wall to give the Mets an early 2-0 lead.
Jose Reyes got in on the action by driving home Walker to add to the tally.
Rene Rivera was next and just missed a home run, knocking a double off the wall to bring home Reyes for the 4-0 lead.
The Mets tacked on another in the top of the second inning. After a Michael Conforto double on a sharp line drive to center, the white hot T.J. Rivera followed with a double of his own to score Conforto.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Michael Conforto hit his eighth home run of the season to give the Mets the 6-1 lead, which they would hold the remainder of the game.
Notes:
T.J. Rivera was 3-4 on the night, bumping his average up to .309 and his OPS to .888.
Jerry Blevins made his 19th appearance in 32 games.
Lucas Duda went 2-4 with a home run in a rehab start for Single-A St. Lucie tonight as he works his way back from a hyperextended elbow.

Wheeler looked much better tonight against a struggling Giants club and gave the Mets exactly what they needed to get back to .500.

The Mets will look for the sweep against the Giants at Citi Field tomorrow afternoon. Newly acquired Tommy Milone (1-0, 6.43 ERA) will take on Matt Cain (2-1, 4.70 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m.
