The New York Mets (65-78) were defeated by the Miami Marlins (72-80) by a score of 9-2 Wednesday afternoon at Marlins Park in Miami.

Offense:

The Mets bats were quiet until the 5th inning when Kevin Plawecki led off the frame with a single. After Brandon Nimmo struck out and Phillip Evans flew out, Travis Taijeron singled off the glove of the third baseman Brian Anderson. With runners on first and third, Travis d’Arnaud, pinch-hitting for Rafael Montero, knocked a single to score the Mets’ first run of the day.

After an uneventful sixth inning, Brandon Nimmo socked a solo home run in the seventh to bring the Mets within three.

Jose Urena was great for the Marlins today. He pitched 8.0 innings allowing two earned runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking none.

Chris O’Grady came in to shut down the Mets in the 9th, but allowed a walk to Kevin Plawecki. With two outs, Phillip Evans hit a soft grounder to third base but Brian Anderson threw it away, allowing Plawecki to advance to third. Alas, Travis Taijeron struck out on four pitches to end the threat and the game.

Pitching:

Rafael Montero started for the Mets and was greeted rudely by Dee Gordon, who legged out a hustle double to center field. With Juan Lagares dealing with “thumb soreness,” Norichika Aoki patrolled center today — if Lagares were in center field, this would have been a single. Montero was able to retire Giancarlo Stanton and Christian Yelich before Marcell Ozuna drove in Gordon with a single to right field.

The third inning was unkind to Montero as another Ozuna RBI single followed by a Justin Bour two-run homer put the Marlins up 4-0. The barrage continued in the fourth as Giancarlo Stanton tallied an RBI single to make it 5-0 Fish. Montero’s final line was 4.0 innings, five earned runs on seven hits, two walks, a home run and two strikeouts.

Chris Flexen relieved Montero and pitched two hitless innings, walking two and striking out one. He gave way to Kevin McGowan who pitched one hitless inning of his own, walking one and striking out one.

Erik Goeddel came in for the 8th but allowed back-to-back solo home runs to A.J. Ellis and Miguel Rojas, extending the Marlins’ lead to 7-2. After retiring pinch-hitter Ichiro Suzuki, Dee Gordon singled. It wouldn’t be a Mets vs. Marlins game without a Giancarlo Stanton home run, which is exactly what happened, bringing the score to 9-2. He was only able to record one out.

Tommy Milone came in to put out the fire and did just that. Despite allowing one hit, he recorded two outs before anyone could score.

Marcell Ozuna went 3-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs on the day. He is certainly turning into a bonafide Met-killer.

On Deck:

The Mets will send Jacob deGrom (15-9, 3.55 ERA) to the hill to face off against the Nationals whose starter has yet to be announced. The game will be Tuesday night at Citi Field, and first pitch will be at 7:10 PM.
