Backed by an outstanding season debut by Seth Lugo, the New York Mets (28-33) beat the Atlanta Braves (27-35) by a score of 2-1 his afternoon for their third straight win.
Pitching
Seth Lugo made his first major league start since last September and was fantastic. The righty threw seven frames of one-run ball, giving up just six hits and two walks while striking out six. He only threw 90 pitches (60 of which were strikes) before Terry Collins pulled him from the game.
The only blunder on Lugo’s line for the afternoon was a sacrifice fly by Dansby Swanson that scored a run, the only time Atlanta would score all day.
Jerry Blevins came in for the eighth and threw a perfect inning, striking out two and tossing 16 pitches. Addison Reed, going for his 11th save of the season, was just as good. He tossed a perfect ninth, making quick work of the bottom of the Braves’ lineup.
Offense
Things were somewhat quiet on the offensive side for the Mets today. Jaime Garcia was on the mound for Atlanta and had another solid outing. He lasted seven frames and gave up two runs.
The Mets got started early, with Michael Conforto leading off the game with a double. He was advanced to third on a sacrifice by Juan Lagares and then tagged up and scored on a Wilmer Flores sacrifice fly. Conforto was 2-for-4 today, bringing his season slash line to .293/.412/.592.
The Mets would score their second and last run of the day in the third. Seth Lugo got things started with a one out double, advancing to third on a Conforto groundout. Lagares reached safely on an infield single, scoring Lugo and giving the Mets a 2-1 lead.
Jay Bruce was the only other Met with an extra base-hit. He was 1-for-4.

The Mets will return to Citi Field tomorrow to begin a three game series with the Chicago Cubs. Jacob deGrom (4-3, 4.75 ERA) will face off against John Lackey (4-6, 5.12 ERA). First pitch is at 7:10.
