The Mets (54-68) dropped another Sunday matinee as they fell to the Marlins (60-62) by a score of 6-4 this afternoon at Citi Field.
Pitching:
Jacob deGrom suffered the loss as he allowed five runs on ten hits. deGrom fell behind from the start as Christian Yelich drove in Dee Gordon with an RBI single in the top of the first. Yelich drove in Gordon again in the third to give the Marlins a 2-1 lead.
Giancarlo Stanton took deGrom deep to left center for a three run shot, putting the game out of reach in the seventh after a series of defensive mishaps.
Josh Smoker was called upon in relief of deGrom, and he was hurt by some sloppy outfield defense. Yoenis Cespedes dropped an easy fly ball in left field, resulting in a Christian Yelich two base hit. A batter later, Marcell Ozuna drove in Yelich extending the Miami lead.
Erik Goeddel and Paul Sewald combined for a scoreless eighth and ninth inning.
Hitting:
Cespedes provided the Mets with their first run of the day as he smacked a solo home run to left. The blast was Cespedes’ 16th home run of the season.
Brandon Nimmo continued his pinch hitting excellence as he lined a pinch hit double in the eighth. Michael Conforto then drew a walk to set up Cespedes with two men on and one out. Cespedes doubled to left, driving in Nimmo and cutting the lead to 6-2.
Wilmer Flores cut the Marlins lead in half, 6-3, bringing Michael Conforto home with a sacrifice fly.
Travis d’Arnaud kept the Mets rally going as he lined an RBI single to left. d’Arnaud put together a solid day at the plate as he had two hits, and drew a walk.
Gavin Cecchini made his first start since being called back up, and he singled and drew a walk.
Dominic Smith went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts on the afternoon.
On deck:
The Mets continue their home stand as Paul Goldschmidt and the Arizona Diamondbacks come to Queens. Robert Gsellman and Taijuan Walker will be on the mound; first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
