The New York Mets (53-65) lost to the New York Yankees (64-55) by a score of 5-3 Wednesday night at Citi Field.

Pitching

Robert Gsellman made his return from a hamstring injury and delivered a decent performance. In 5.1 innings he allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks, striking out two. One of those earned runs came on a long Aaron Judge solo home run into the upper deck on a hanging slider.

Gsellman left the game in the 6th inning after loading the bases with one out on two consecutive four-pitch walks. Paul Sewald came in and allowed a sacrifice fly to score one run. Garrett Cooper then lined out to Amed Rosario at shortstop to end the inning and close the book on Gsellman.

Sewald stayed in for the seventh and worked himself into trouble, loading the bases for Aaron Judge with one out. Sewald won the battle, inducing a pop-up to the catcher. Then, with Josh Smoker warm in the bullpen, Sewald was left in to face lefty-hitting Didi Gregorius who socked a two-run double down the right field line to give the Yankees a 5-3 lead.Gary Sanchez then grounded out to Cabrera at third to end the inning.

Chasen Bradford came in for the 8th inning and was greeted rudely by Chase Headley who lined a base hit to left field. After striking out Garrett Cooper, Ronald Torreyes singled to put runners on first and second and knock Bradford from the game.

Josh Smoker came in to face pinch-hitter Brett Gardner and got him swinging for the second out. Jacoby Ellsbury then grounded out weakly to first base to end the threat.

Erik Goeddel was tasked with the ninth inning and got Todd Frazier to pop-up to Travis d’Arnaud at second, his first defensive play of the evening. He then struck out Aaron Judge on a nasty splitter. This was the 33rd straight game Judge has struck out, a new MLB record. The previous owner of the record was Adam Dunn with 32 games. A Didi Gregorius groundout ended the frame.

Offense

After Wilmer Flores and Jose Reyes were scratched with the same injury, a strained left ribcage muscle, Travis d’Arnaud was left playing third base with Asdrubal Cabrera at second. The Mets tried to “hide” him all night, switching those two between second and third base depending on the situation.

Juan Lagares, batting first in the order instead of Reyes, responded by leading off the game with a double down the left field line. After a productive Cabrera groundout moved Lagares to third, Yoenis Cespedes hit a sacrifice fly to break the seal and give the Mets a 1-0 lead.

The next run scored by the Mets came on a solo shot by Rene Rivera which then tied the game at two.

Asdrubal Cabrera led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a base hit to right field, but when he tried to advance on a pitch in the dirt he was thrown out by catcher Gary Sanchez. After Yoenis Cespedes walked, Michael Conforto lined a double to the left-center field gap to put runners on second and third with one out. Travis d’Arnaud then drove a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing in the run and tying the game at three.

Juan Lagares showed what kind of spark he can provide at the top of the lineup in the 8th when he laid down a nice bunt for a hit to lead off the inning. Asdrubal Cabrera then struck out on a very questionable called third strike for the first out. Yoenis Cespedes then struck out swinging before Michael Conforto grounded one into the shift to end the inning.

With Dellin Betances and Aroldis Chapman both unavailable, David Robertson was tasked with the save chance tonight with the Yankees leading 5-3 in the ninth. The second baseman-third baseman hybrid d’Arnaud popped out to second for the first out of the inning. Amed Rosario then struck out on a curveball in the dirt, but the ball got away and Rosario reached base. Smith then grounded one softly to the shortstop, softly enough that the Yankees could not turn two.

Up came Rene Rivera representing the tying run with two outs and a runner on first base, but he struck out looking on a Robertson curveball to end the game.
