The Dallas Morning News quoted Texas Rangers GM Jon Daniels who spoke about the logjam in their middle infield and specifically about shortstop prospect Jurickson Profar who garnered a lot of interest during this season’s deadline. Daniels expects plenty of teams to inquire on Profar this winter.
“I feel like everyone on our staff and in our group felt as though this is going to be a winning baseball player, and exactly to what degree he develops, how quickly he develops, what his roll is going to be next year, those are things I can’t answer. But this guy’s going to be a winning player, and everyday player in the big leagues for a long time.”
“I’ll tell you this, we got asked about him a ton in July, and I expect we’ll get asked about him a ton again this winter, so I think the industry views it the same way we do.”
Regarding the possibility of trading Profar, Elvis Andrus or Ian Kinsler, Daniels added, “If helps us get better and win, then yeah, and I think we’d consider trading somebody. If it doesn’t, we’re not going to force it. There are a lot worse problems than having too many good players for a position.”
Profar was ranked as the number one prospect in the majors by both Baseball America and Jonathan Mayo of MiLB.com entering the 2013 season.
MLB Trade Rumors recently reported that either Elvis Andrus or Jurickson Profar will not e traded for anything less than a major haul.
One Rangers beat writer speculated that the Rangers could headline a package to Tampa Bay for lefty David Price, whom the Rangers could control through 2015.
Where do the Mets fit in here? Tough to say. I can easily dismiss any interest in Andrus because of the 8-year extension he signed that will net him an average of $15 million a year. No way the Mets bite on a $120 million commitment.
Then the other question is do they have the wherewithal to give up what it would take to get Profar? I strongly doubt it. The Mets, as we’re all now accustomed to seeing in this new era, will aim lower… Much lower…
