According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, former New York Mets catcher Mike Piazza will be increasing his presence around the organization.

Puma notes that Piazza will be taking on some community relations and marketing responsibilities, as well as building relationships with the players. Piazza was in camp at Port St. Lucie serving as a guest instructor this past week.

While speaking with reporters via Zoom for close to an hour earlier in the week he said, “I thought it was very important to show up for a few days and reconnect with the guys and wish them luck on the upcoming season. Just one day and it’s been a joy. I’ve had some great conversations and met some of the new guys.”

When asked about new Mets owner Steve Cohen, Piazza said Mets fans “should rest well knowing the team is in good hands and the future looks bright.” Piazza took in Saturday evening’s 8-3 win over the Houston Astros alongside Cohen in a suite at Clover Park.

Without revealing any details, Piazza also added that he will be in attendance at Citi Field on September 11th when the Mets play the New York Yankees on the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. One of the biggest moments in Piazza’s career was the post-9/11 home run that helped New York heal.

When asked about Piazza’s increased presence around the club pregame on Sunday afternoon, Mets manager Luis Rojas said it will be great to have the Hall of Famer around the team more.

“He’s so outspoken his personality, he lights up the room when he comes in. I had really good conversations with him… Definitely a great asset to have around, it was really nice and really cool that he was among us for the few days,” Rojas said.
