According to the New York Post’s Mike Puma, the Mets are considering promoting third base prospect Brett Baty.

His call-up depends on the result of Luis Guillorme‘s MRI scheduled on Monday. Guillorme left Sunday’s game with a groin injury.

Mark Vientos has not been in any promotion discussions, says Puma.

According to MLB Pipeline, Baty is the Mets No. 2 prospect and the No. 18 prospect in baseball.

The 22-year-old was recently promoted to Triple-A Syracuse. He’s appeared in six games at the top minor league level. Baty is off to a hot start hitting .364/.462/.364 with an RBI, three walks, and six strikeouts in 22 at-bats.

More indicative of Baty’s ability is his 89 games at Double-A Binghamton this season where he slashed .312/.406/.544 with 19 home runs, 22 doubles, and a 98-46 K-BB ratio.

Baty has split time in the field. He’s played the vast majority of games at third base but has played 11 games in left field this season.

If he is called up the idea is he would spend it at third base where he had a .920 fielding percentage at in Binghamton. He’s played 604 innings at third base this season. No major leaguer with that many innings at third base has a fielding percentage below .947.

Vientos has been even worse at third base with a .899 fielding percentage in 337 innings.

In recent days the Mets infield depth has been tested. Jeff McNeil and Eduardo Escobar each departed Friday’s game with an injury. McNeil played Saturday and Sunday while Escobar played on Sunday. Escobar replaced Guillorme when he left.

Neither expects to hit the injured list but Escobar says he’s still feeling discomfort in his left oblique, which prevented him from hitting right-handed. Mark Canha is a possible third base starter if needed. Obviously, the Mets prefer to keep him in the outfield.

The Mets already made one move, calling up Gosuke Katoh to the taxi squad on Saturday. He has not appeared in a game for the Mets yet.

If Guillorme’s MRI comes back clean, the Mets will likely withhold making a roster move and Baty will remain in Triple-A.

New York enters a critical stretch of their final two months with four games against Atlanta and four games against Philadelphia to be played in the next week.

The Mets have a 5.5 game lead on the Braves for the division. Atlanta has been boosted by minor league call-ups Michael Harris II and Vaughn Grissom. Maybe the Mets get inspired but the likelihood is the top prospects remain prospects for the time being.
