For as disappointing as a series that the Mets played at the beginning of last week–losing two of three in San Francisco, including a heartbreaking 13-12 loss after a valiant comeback effort–the team got to playing perhaps its best baseball all season by week’s end. Entering the new week (following the holiday on Monday), the Mets are on a four-game winning streak, the first time they’ve done that all year. Over the weekend, the Mets picked up their first sweep of the season as well, overwhelming the Phillies and now hold an incredible 9 1/2 game lead over the rest of the NL East.

The Mets are back. And in a lineup that has emerged as one of the best in the entire sport, a handful of bats stood out this week. Starling Marte batted .375 with seven runs batted in. Pete Alonso posted an OPS of 1.156 with three home runs and 10 runs batted in. Luis Guillorme got on base at a .579 rate, including three multi-hit games.

But standing out the most was shortstop Francisco Lindor, who not only has bounced back greatly from last year’s struggles, but has solidly entered his name into early 2022 NL MVP consideration. On the rubber, David Peterson put together two effective starts that led to two Met wins. His recent success has further highlighted the Mets arms’ ability to step up when needed most, even when injuries have toppled the gems of the rotation.

Hitter of the Week

Francisco Lindor continues to show why the Mets signed him to the largest contracts in franchise history.

Last week, Lindor slashed .393/.438/.821/1.359 with two doubles, two triples, two home runs, and a very impressive 16 runs batted in. In fact, Lindor has recorded an RBI in his last eight games, the longest RBI streak for a Met since Carlos Beltran in June of 2006. In that crazy loss against the Giants, Lindor picked up six RBIs, including a go-ahead three-run triple in the eighth inning that put the Mets in the lead after trailing 8-2 as late as the seventh inning. Lindor tallied four multi-hits games on the week, capped by a three-hit performance on Memorial Day. His RBI prowess is not just limited to recently though, as his consistency in driving in runs ranks near the top of all NL batters.

Pitcher of the Week

In a rather unspectacular week for the Mets rotation–that is to say, no pitcher truly stood out from the pack–David Peterson takes this week’s Pitcher of the Week honors with two strong starts against the Giants and Phillies, respectively. On May 23 against the Giants, Peterson allowed two runs on three hits over six innings, walking one and striking out six. Despite not pitching for the previous three weeks, Peterson still went 99 pitches and picked up his second victory of the season.

Monday against the Nats, Peterson allowed four runs on six sits across 4 2/3 frames. He also walked four batters while striking out just one. While not the prettiest stat line, it was more than enough, as the Mets offense exploded for 13 runs. Coincidentally, the Mets also scored 13 runs in Peterson’s win against the Giants. He’s been far from perfect but has pitched well enough to put the Mets in comfortable situations while their red-hot bats have made up for any flaws in the pitching. That being said, Peterson now holds a very impressive 131 ERA+ in six games (five starts) this season, which would be a career-high among his three seasons in the big leagues thus far.

Additionally, the fact that he’s pitched so well with Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer, and Tylor Megill all on the injured list has been a welcome surprise for this rotation.

A special shout out goes to Colin Holderman, who tossed 6 1/3 innings over four relief appearances last week, allowing just one run and four hits with eight strikeouts.
