Let’s be real, this past week was absolutely a week to forget for the New York Mets. They dropped three out of four to the Miami Marlins and then were swept by the Philadelphia Phillies, falling all the way to third place in the division.

The pitching staff didn’t throw terribly, but the offense was nowhere to be found, and was unable to pick them up. Brandon Nimmo and Dominic Smith were really the only contributors on the offensive side of things.

The Mets will look to turn things around quickly, as they come home to open up a three-game set against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night at Citi Field. That’s, of course, followed up with 13-straight games against the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants.

Pitcher of the Week: Rich Hill

In his third outing with the club, Rich Hill provided the Mets with his best outing thus far. The veteran left-hander allowed just one unearned run on three hits and one walk while striking out three over five innings.

With one out in the bottom of the third, Miguel Rojas lined a single to right-center, and advanced to second on a Michael Conforto error. After Rojas stole third, Jazz Chisholm lifted a sacrifice fly to give the Marlins the lead.

The offense was able to get Hill off the hook, but the bullpen faltered late, and the Mets dropped the series finale with the Marlins 4-2 on Thursday afternoon.

Hill has been handed a trio of no-decisions thus far, and has allowed six earned runs over 15 innings pitched. On the season, he is now 6-4 with a 3.92 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 40 walks, and 99 strikeouts over 110 innings pitched.

At this point in his career, Hill isn’t going to work too deep into games, but he has provided the Mets with a solid backend of the rotation arm. Hill is scheduled to make his fourth start as a Met on Wednesday night against right-hander Joe Ross and the Nationals at 7:10 PM.

Hitter of the Week: Dominic Smith

As I mentioned above, this past week was a week to forget for the Mets offense. They simply did not show up to one of the biggest series of the season. Over the three-game set in Philly, they scored just five runs.

One of the lone bright spots at the plate was Dominic Smith. The sweet-swinging lefty pushed his hitting streak to nine games during the week, before ultimately snapping it on Saturday afternoon.

While Smith did hit .292 over the past week, six of his seven hits were singles. He also scored a run and added a trio of RBI. Of late, Smith has been one of the better hitters in this struggling lineup, but the need to see more pop from him.

He’s now up to a .254 average on the season, with a .704 OPS, 11 home runs, 14 doubles, and 49 RBI.

It’s pretty simple, not just Smith, this whole offense needs to turn things around right now. That has to start tonight back at home against right-hander Paolo Espino and the depleted Washington Nationals.
