We’re over a month through the 2022 Major League Baseball season, and the New York Mets have yet to lose a series.
Facing two division rivals in their first week of May, the Amazins continued their hot streak, going 4-3 on the week against the Braves and Phillies. Despite beginning the week with a lackluster 5-2 loss to Atlanta, the Mets followed up with a doubleheader sweep the following day before dropping another non-competitive game in the series finale.
Against the defending World Series champions, the Mets should have been pleased with a series split at home. But the real magic of the week happened 117 miles south on I-95, where the Mets completed one of their greatest comebacks in team history. In Thursday’s series opener, Starling Marte‘s RBI double capped off an improbable seven-run ninth inning comeback that gave the Mets a remarkable 8-7 victory.
After Philly picked up a narrow 3-2 victory in the opener of a doubleheader on Sunday–after the previous two days were rained out–the Mets were backed by an impressive start from Chris Bassitt, who lowered his ERA to 2.45 on the season.
Hitter of the Week
Starling Marte picked up 40 points on his season batting average, collecting multiple multiple base hits in four of the six games he played last week and hitting safely in all but just one. Over 25 plate appearances, the first-year Met slashed .417/440/.667 with three doubles, a home run, four runs scored, and two runs batted in. After picking up two hits apiece in each of the losses to Atlanta, Marte put together a performance for the ages on Thursday evening in Philadelphia.
With the Mets trailing 7-1 entering the ninth inning (giving the Phillies a 99.9% percent win probability), Marte led off the inning with a seemingly harmless single. Little did anyone realize at the time that Marte would come up to bat again later in the inning. His double off the wall in center scored Brandon Nimmo from first base, putting the Mets ahead just before Edwin Diaz shut the door for the Mets largest comeback win in the past 25 years.
Don’t forget that Marte also homered in the sixth inning of that game, narrowing the Mets deficit to “only” six runs. Quite poetic that Marte started the scoring, started the ninth-inning rally, and ultimately completed the ninth-inning rally. In under two months in Queens, Marte has already etched his name into a piece of Mets history.
If you have not yet watched Gary Cohen’s call of Marte’s game-winning hit, please enjoy the following – even if you’re now watching it for the 250th time.
Honorable Mention: Pete Alonso, who hit two home runs and knocked in five runs in the Mets win on Sunday afternoon.

Pitcher of the Week
Amidst a memorable week for the Mets lineup, Chris Bassitt quietly put together a very effective week on the rubber. Across two starts, Bassitt pitched 12 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on 11 hits and two walks. He allowed a home run in both of the starts –to Austin Riley and Jean Segura, respectively–but otherwise came away with two quality starts. In last Monday’s loss versus the Braves, Bassitt tied a season-high with eight strikeouts, throwing 95 pitches in seven strong innings.
In the Mets’ win in the second game of Sunday’s twin-bill, Bassitt picked up the Mother’s Day victory by using a wide variety of all his pitch types.
His sinker, cutter, changeup, slider, and four-seam fastball were all thrown at least 14 times, with all six of his pitches–the curveball as well–registering at least an 18% called strike + whiff rate. With Bassitt’s fastball sitting just over 93 mph and his curveball clocking in at just a tad over 71 mph, he kept hitters guessing throughout the afternoon, generating eight whiffs and 19 called strikes.
Honorable Mention: Carlos Carrasco, who pitched an absolute gem on Tuesday, delivered eight shutout innings in his best start as a Met thus far.
