The New York Mets, amidst a selloff, enjoyed one of their more successful weeks of the season as they split a two-game series with the crosstown rival New York Yankees before taking three of four from the Washington Nationals. Pete Alonso returned to form following a prolonged slump during that stretch, while Justin Verlander continued his run of dominance with two fantastic outings.

Hitter of the Week

It was clear Pete Alonso wouldn’t be held down for long, and this week he proved why he’s one of the game’s most dangerous hitters when he’s on.

It didn’t take long for Alonso to get going, either. On Tuesday, he broke his 13-game homerless streak with a three-run bomb off Domingo Germán in the third inning before also mashing a solo shot in the sixth. After going hitless on Wednesday, he came through with a clutch single in the eighth inning in Thursday’s game that helped form a comeback against the Nationals.

Alonso, who had just one multi-home run game on the season prior to this week, recorded his second in four days on Friday with a three-run shot in the fifth inning off MacKenzie Gore and a two-run homer off Rico Garcia in the seventh.

Alonso finished the week with four home runs and 12 RBI, along with a .304/.370/.826 slash line.

Pitcher of the Week

For as much as Justin Verlander has raised his trade value in recent weeks, he’s also proven just how integral he is to the Mets’ success, both now and in the future.

Verlander’s first start of the week came against the Yankees on Tuesday. Despite struggling with his command, Verlander allowed just two hits and struck out six batters over the course of six shutout innings.

In Sunday afternoon’s bout with the Nationals, Verlander got off to a rocky start after allowing a run to score before recording an out. He settled in quickly, though, and allowed just three more hits over his 5 1/3 innings of work, in which he also struck out five batters en route to the 250th win of his illustrious career.

In what could very well be the last week of his career in the orange and blue, Verlander threw 11 1/3 innings while allowing just one run and striking out 11 hitters.
