Savannah 7, Delmarva 2

The Savannah Sand Gnats completed a three-game sweep of the Delmarva Shorebirds with a 7-2 victory Thursday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats outscored the ‘Birds 25-6 over the three games. Dating back to last year, Savannah (12-8) has outscored Delmarva (11-10) 45-8 in the last six games between the teams at Historic Grayson Stadium.

Gnats’ starter Gabriel Ynoa allowed a run in the top of the first and then nothing else in his six and a third innings of work. The 19-year old RHP 12 batters in a row from the third through the seventh innings and 18-of-20 batters. He earned the win to improve to 2-2 with a 3.38 ERA.

Savannah tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth on DH Kevin Plawecki‘s solo homerun to left, his fourth of the year. Plawecki finished 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

The Gnats took a 2-1 later in the fourth when 3B Yucarybert De La Cruz, singled. He went to third on SS Phillip Evans single into centerfield and then scored on a wild pitch.

Savannah added three runs in the fifth on an RBI single by 1B Jayce Boyd and two-run double into left field by LF Stefan Sabol to build a 5-1 lead.

Boyd’s solo homer in the seventh made it 7-1 Gnats. He came into the day leading the SAL in batting average and on-base percentage and finished Thursday 3-for-4 with a homer, two runs scored and two driven in. In the three games against Delmarva, Boyd was 7-for-10 with two doubles, a homer, and four walks.

Savannah welcomes the West Virginia Power to town on Friday night when LHP Steven Matz (1-0, 1.29) takes on RHP Clay Holmes (1-1, 3.50). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and gates to Historic Grayson Stadium open at 6 pm.
