While Dominic Smith awaits his call-up, the Mets have another first baseman lurking in the minor leagues. Peter Alonso, currently with the High-A St. Lucie Mets, has been making his case for why Smith shouldn’t be the undisputed first baseman of the future.

Alonso, 22, went 1-for-3 last night against the Tampa Yankees, raising his batting average on the season to .291. Since July 1st, however, he has been hitting at a monster pace, going 46-for-131 (.351) with a .433 on base percentage and .634 slugging percentage. That makes for a 1.067 OPS since July 1st, but an important takeaway is his power surge.

This is his second professional season, but he’s already blown his freshman season’s home run total (five in 30 games) out of the water with 14 in 67 games this season. The Mets #12 prospect per Metsmerized Online has been known for his power since his signing, however he is finally showing he can bring it into games.

At 6-foot-3 and 245 lbs, Alonso could end up being a serious power threat for the Mets in the coming years. Some scouts don’t like Dominic Smith for his lack of power, but Alonso does not have that problem. He is in High-A ball, but at 22 years old, don’t be surprised to see him climb the minor league ranks with haste.
