Wednesday night was a night to forget for the New York Mets, as they fell to the Atlanta Braves by a score of 20-2, yes unfortunately you did read that correctly, Albert Almora Jr pitched and the Mets lost 20-2.

Safe to say, not much at all went right for the Mets in this one. After the top of the first inning they were outscored by Atlanta 20-0. Perhaps the lone bright spot on both sides of things for the boys in orange and blue, was the hot bat of first baseman Pete Alonso.

Kevin Pillar led off the game with a double to left field, but then Francisco Lindor and Michael Conforto both struck out, and it looked as though the struggling Mets offense was going to waste another golden opportunity.

However, Alonso jumped on the first pitch he saw from Braves left-hander Max Fried, and crushed it to deep left center to give the Mets the early 2-0 lead. Unfortunately, that’s all the Mets offense was able to muster on the night.

But for Alonso, it was his thirteenth home run of the season, and his second this week. The big man also cranked a two-run shot in the eighth inning of the Mets’ 8-4 loss to the Washington Nationals on Monday night.

Since being activated from the injured list, Alonso has been one of the best performers for this Mets offense. Over the month of June, he hit a solid .293 with an .861 OPS, six homers, two doubles, nine walks, and just two strikeouts.

He’s really been seeing the ball well of late, slashing .306/.393/.510 with three homers, six walks, six RBI, and even a stolen base over his past 15 games. Despite the lack of power, Alonso has been putting together a relatively strong season offensively.

His recent success has helped raise his average to .261 for the campaign. He’s also been getting on-base at a .350 clip, has the thirteen homers, nine doubles, and is up to an .822 OPS through 66 games.

It’s been great to see Alonso become more of an all-around hitter and getting on-base more this season, but hopefully this week’s performance is a sign of things to come for the big man in the power department.

The struggling Mets offense certainly needs that big middle of the order bat to start carrying them. If Alonso can go off on one of those tears where he just puts this team on his back, it would be absolutely huge.

Alonso will try to keep the good times rolling on Thursday night as him and the Mets look to bounce-back and take the rubber game from right-hander Ian Anderson and the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park.
