No. 40!

Mets’ rookie first baseman, Pete Alonso, made history on Sunday as he crushed his 40th home run of the campaign, setting a National League rookie record. The mark was previously set by Dodgers’ outfielder Cody Bellinger who had 39 in 2017.

It’s no secret how valuable Alonso, 24, has been for the Mets this season.

In Spring Training, Mets’ general manager Brodie Van Wagenen named Alonso to the Opening Day roster despite service time restrictions, and the Florida native hasn’t looked back.

Since then, Alonso has provided the Mets with 4.1 bWAR, a slash line of .266/.370/.594, a Home Run Derby title and All-Star Game appearance, and a potential future Rookie of the Year award.

With his 40th home run, Alonso is 12 shy of the MLB record, set by Aaron Judge in 2017 with just over a month and a half left in the season.

The first baseman is also just one home run shy of the Mets’ club record of 41 long balls, which is held by Todd Hundley and Carlos Beltran.
