Pete Alonso’s game-tying solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning during the second game of the Mets’ doubleheader with the Detroit Tigers on Thursday broke the team out of an extended scoring slump while simultaneously earning him yet another accolade in his illustrious career up to this point.

Alonso’s blast, which came off of his former University of Florida teammate Alex Faedo, pushed him past the 500 RBI plateau in his 690th game, making him the 10th player in franchise history to accomplish that feat while also beating out David Wright (727 games) as the quickest to do so. He currently sits 21 RBI behind Cleon Jones and José Reyes for the eighth-most by a Met.

The home run travelled 403 feet to left-center field and snapped Detroit’s bid at a shutout while also marking the Mets’ first run since the fifth inning of the prior contest. It acted as a precursor to Tyrone Taylor’s walk-off RBI single later in the frame that put an end to a season-opening five-game losing streak, New York’s longest of the kind since 2005, and gifted Carlos Mendoza the first win of his managerial career.
