The Mets avoided a potential five game losing streak and now head to St. Louis on a positive note thanks to Mike Pelfrey who helped deliver a big 5-0 win over the Rockies this afternoon at Coors Field.
Game Notes
Pelfrey improved his record to 2-0 today with an absolutely dominating performance in which he pitched seven shutout innings and held the Rockies to just five hits, while walking none and striking out a season high seven batters. Pelfrey was as confident as we’ve seen him in a long time and did a heck of a job executing all four of his pitches, working both sides of the plate and inducing a grounder whenever he needed one. He never allowed a hitter to get past second base. It was the type of performance we needed from Big Pelf and hopefully this was just a sign of many more good things to come.
I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, but it could be that Mike Pelfrey is finally coming of age and is ready to deliver that breakthrough season we have all been anxiously awaiting. Pelfrey is now 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA through two starts.
Can you guess who had two more hits today for the Mets? It’s Mr. Metsmerized himself, Jeff Francoeur, who now has himself a nine game hitting streak and is batting .445 this season. Jose Reyes and Luis Castillo also had a couple of hits each, although they also committed a couple of big baserunning blunders that snuffed out what might have been a big rally in the third inning.
David Wright had three more walks today and until Jason Bay starts getting hot, pitchers will continue to pitch around number five. Get Francoeur in the four spot, even if it’s temporary, play the hot hand!
I’m still not thrilled with the first base situation, and I think it’s time for us to at least give Chris Carter a shot before ultimately calling up Ike Davis in July. I’m not loyal to the name on the back of the uniform, only to the name on the front. Forget Jacobs, we gave him a shot, now lets see what Chris Carter can do who is ripping the ball in Buffalo.
Adam Rubin tweeted that this was the first Mets shutout in Denver in franchise history. Didn’t one-time Met Hideo Nomo pitch a no-hitter there? (obviously not as a Met)
The win salvaged the final game of the series, but more importantly, halted a four-game losing streak that was beginning to wear out the fan base, or was it just me?
It was a great game and I hope most of you were able to catch it. Nothing gets my juices flowing more than a Mets win, lets do it again tomorrow!
