Mets closer Bobby Parnell, who is currently on the disabled list due to a herniated disk in his neck, received some good news on Tuesday after undergoing a followup exam with team doctors in New York.
After his exam, doctors concluded that Parnell is making progress, according to a report by Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.
However, Parnell remains idle and there is no timetable for his return.
Still this is good news considering what general manager told reporters before the weekend when he suggested that surgery could wipe out the rest of his season.
“He had a series of injections last week. He had an epidural yesterday. And so right now we’re simply evaluating how he responds to those two treatments,” Alderson said.
“We’ll know more in the next two or three days. But it is conceivable that if those don’t work, something more significant, more invasive would have to be considered — surgery, possibly.”
Parnell was placed on the disabled list on August 6 and was having the best season of his career with a 2.16 ERA and 22 saves in 49 appearances.
For now, LaTroy Hawkins has filled in for Parnell and has performed admirably as the team’s ninth inning man.
