New York Mets vice president of alumni public relations Jay Horwitz announced that Original Met Ken MacKenzie passed away on Wednesday morning at his home in Guilford, Connecticut. The Canadian-born pitcher was 89 years old.

MacKenzie was part of the expansion Mets in 1962 that only won 40 games, yet he somehow had a winning record at 5-4. The lefty pitched in a career-high 80 innings that season despite starting only one game.

MacKenzie went 3-1 with a 4.97 ERA with the Mets in 1963 before he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Yale alumni pitched in 129 major league games between the Mets, Cardinals, Braves, Astros, and Giants.

Ken checked himself out of the hospital in 2022 to participate in the Mets Old Timers’ Day. He posed for a photo with fellow Yalie Ron Darling.

Horwitz notes that there are now nine living members of the original Mets.
