Mets ace Johan Santana pitched into the eighth inning and held the Yankees to just one run, while Jason Bay homered twice off CC Sabathia, as the Mets beat the Yankees 6-4 in the Subway Series finale at Citi Field.

Game Summary

Santana stepped up and gave the Mets a dominant start against a tough opponent in C.C. Sabathia and the defending champs, New York Yankees. Johan allowed just one run on six hits, while walking three and striking out five over 7 2/3 innings pitched. Johan was sharp and worked efficiently allowing him to pitch deep into the game. It was billed as a battle of aces, but Santana easily bested Sabathia to improve to 4-2 on the season with a 3.41 ERA.

Pedro Feliciano came into the eighth inning to relieve Johan and got a huge out with the bases loaded to keep the score 6-1. Unfortunately, instead of coming out to pitch the ninth inning, Feliciano was bypassed in favor of Ryota Igarashi who was activated from the DL before the game.

Iggy was very rusty to say the least and it made for a very tense moment in the ninth as he walked Swisher, allowed a single to Cervelli and then a run scoring single to pinch hitter Juan Miranda, before exiting in favor of Frankie Rodriguez.

Things got little bit more interesting when K-Rod was greeted by an RBI double by Jeter followed by a groundout to score another run and cut the Mets lead to 6-3 with two outs. After a single by Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez came up as the tying run, but K-Rod bore down striking him out to end the game and pick up his 8th save.

The offense racked up eleven hits, but none were bigger than the pair of homeruns from Jason bay who has shined since moving up to third in the batting order. Bay is now batting .307 and looks every bit like the power hitter that the Mets need right now. He has ten hits in his last fifteen at-bats.

Jose Reyes and Ike Davis both had a couple of hits and a run scored, and Alex Cora had a big two-run single to put the Mets on the board in the second inning. For those of you keeping tabs, David Wright picked up two more strikeouts, but also had a hit and an RBI.

This was a pretty solid win for the Mets who took two out of three from the Yanks. Believe it or not, this was the first rubber game that the Mets have won this season. Crazy, huh? Tomorrow they get a well deserved day off before the Phils roll into town.

Game Ball

Santana pitched brilliantly, but Jason Bay had a huge coming out party with two big homers, three ribbies and a walk.
