Every year since 2009, as the Mets gets ready to begin Spring Training, I ask everyone on our staff to describe how they feel about the upcoming season in one word.

I then take each word and put them all into one graphic.

The last few years have been very depressing, to say the least, but I am loving the way our 2014 One Word has turned out.

2014 IN ONE WORD

Okay, so we have a couple of people on our team that aren’t that impressed with the Mets going into the new season. But the overwhelming sentiment here is one of hope and excitement – and I mean that literally. I received 3 Exciting and 6 Hope.

There’s a feeling in the air that things are getting better in Flushing, and this could be the year when the Mets wake up from their five year slumber and begin to compete again. Even the pessimists among you would agree that our minor league system is starting to flourish and that some of the pieces we’ve been waiting for are now here and have have shown us some flashes of excitement.

Sure, there’s still a lot of work to do, but look at how far we’ve come.

We’re starting to fill out the rotation with young arms in Zack Wheeler, Jon Niese, Jenrry Mejia and Dillon Gee, and the bullpen could become a strength for the first time in years, led by Bobby Parnell and Vic Black.

And while the offense still lacks some real punch, all of that could change if Travis d’Arnaud and Juan Lagares step up this season like many of us expect them to. This lineup could really surprise in 2014.
