When Sandy Alderson stepped down as general manager of the New York Mets in June, the team named the triumvirate of assistant GM John Ricco, J.P. Ricciardi, and Omar Minaya as the group who would remain at the helm through the season.

Buster Onley of ESPN noted on Friday evening that the Mets have indeed asked about former Boston Red Sox general manager, Ben Cherington.

Cherington, 44, began his tenure with the Sox in 1999, holding a slew of positions within the team’s scouting department and front office, before being handed the reins after the 2011 season.

His time in Boston culminated with a World Series title in 2013, before resigning in 2015 after a last-place finish in 2014, as well as at the time of his resignation in August the following year.

Cherington has been the vice president of baseball operations with the Toronto Blue Jays since September 2016.
