The Mets became the first team in the major leagues to have four or less hits for five consecutive games since 2004. Ironically, that futility was also last accomplished by the Mets.
Since the All Star break, the Mets are last in Runs per Game (3.0), Batting Average (.210) and Slugging Pct. (.304). Additionally, Mets hitters lead the majors with 239 strikeouts during that span.
The Mets have lost five of seven in this homestand and head to Oakland with a sluggish offense that still has too many unanswered questions.
Aside from Daniel Murphy, who may not even be here next season, and Lucas Duda, who has been a pleasant surprise, players who were expected to produce have struggled mightily and chief among them are David Wright and Curtis Granderson who comprise more than a third of the team’s payroll.
Rumors still buzz about how reluctant Sandy Alderson is to move an arm to bring in a young bat that could help the team for years to come – a reluctance that has only been heightened with the rise in injuries to pitchers including the Mets’ own Matt Harvey, Jeremy Hefner and Bobby Parnell.
At some point something’s gotta give and the Mets will have to do something if they expect to ever reach contender status or at the very least reach .500. Great pitching alone doesn’t win games as the Mets have seen time and time again during this frustrating season and especially in this just concluded homestand where several solid performances were squandered away.
