What a sleeper… The lifeless Mets were no match for the resurgent Astros who beat the Mets by the score of 4-1 in the second game of their weekend series at Citi Field.
Game Notes
Johan Santana was trying to become the first Mets starter to hurl four straight complete games since 1988, but it was very apparent early on that Johan wasn’t going to make it to the ninth… or the eight…
Usually it’s hard for Santana to notch a win unless he holds the opposition to two runs or less, but when he allows four runs, there’s little to no chance the Mets offense will gut out a win for him. Johan lasted seven innings tonight and allowed eight hits and walked one. The big blow came in the fifth inning when he let up a two run bomb by who else… Carlos Lee.
“I’m not perfect,” Santana said. “You’re going to give up some runs out there. It’s just how you manage to go as deep as you can in the game and hoping your team at some point will come back and score some runs. It wasn’t the case tonight.”
The bullpen kept the ‘Stros from padding the score with Manny Acosta pitching a scoreless two-thirds of an inning, and Pedro Feliciano retiring the last four batters in a row.
Ike Davis and Luis Castillo had a couple of hits each… Big deal.
David Wright drove in the only run in the game and now has 86 RBIs… Big deal.
The offense just continues to falter. Tonight the Mets were 1-10 with runners in scoring position and they left nine runners on base.
Turning Point
The game was over after the top of the 1st inning when the Astros got to Johan Santana for 2 runs. If you had turned off your TV’s after that, you really wouldn’t have missed anything and you probably would have prevented a case of heartburn too.
Game Ball
I hate giving game balls after a loss. Can I give Johan a game ball even though he gave up four runs? Yes. Will I? No.
On Deck
The Mets will send R.A. Dickey (8-5 2.64) to the mound against the Astros Bud Norris (6-7 5.03) in the series finale. Game time is 1:10 PM
