After a few rare off days in late August to ‘weather the storm’ that was Hurricane Irene, the Mets are back in action later this afternoon for a doubleheader against the Florida Marlins.
Terry Collins addressed the media before the twin bill.
He first off said the field is in great shape after the Category 1 hurricane, which was downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it hit the northeast.
The team evacuated after the game Friday—Chris Capuano’s shutout gem—just in time to reach safety.
Collins waited out the storm at his Manhattan apartment and was happy to report there was no damage. He did say the winds whipped around for a while and it was a scary sight.
In team related news, Ike Davis ran on Friday. Collins said he would be in constant contact with Davis over the next week to see what the next step is moving forward.
Collins is making it a point to consider Ike’s perspective on the matter. He knows that Davis wants to be on the field helping the team, but would it be wiser to risk further injury for a team that’s well out of contention.
Ronny Paulino suffered a broken toe, but the team is still uncertain if they’ll put him on the DL. It may be more likely though, since the team will need a spot once Jose Reyes is activated.
Reyes told Collins that he wants to be on the field no matter what.
Meanwhile, the team is on the field testing out the conditions, with the infielders at their position on the dirt and the outfielders in center. The pitchers are getting in some work in the right field corner.
It’s a beautiful day here at Citi Field, so it seems like Irene is already in the distant past.
