One of my favorite Mets beat writers is Anthony DiComo who always finds a way to mix in some well-written and insightful player profiles along with his non-stop comprehensive coverage of the team.
Last night, I came across a very good read he wrote on Noah Syndergaard, who has been one of the most heavily profiled pitching prospects of this offseason. Everybody loves him.
To look at Syndergaard is to understand immediately why he is not only universally recognized as the Mets’ top prospect, but as one of the best in all of baseball, writes DiComo.
From a physical standpoint, Noah “Thor” Syndergaard is the definition of the classic Texas gunslinger — a stereotype that, over the years, has enveloped the reputations of Nolan Ryan and Roger Clemens, Kerry Wood and Josh Beckett.
From a Mets perspective, Syndergaard shares more with Zack Wheeler, the easygoing Georgian, than Matt Harvey, the Manhattan socialite. But all three in reality have little in common, other than freakish talent and the weight of expectation.
DiComo says that Syndergaard “will almost certainly debut in June or July”, potentially giving the Mets one of the most dynamic young rotations in baseball.
I just love the sound of that…
In another piece DiComo posted on his blog Mets Cetera, he shared a recent quote from Mets vice president of amateur scouting Paul DePodesta who says:
“I think Roy Smith put it really, really well when we were in talks with Toronto to trade for him a year and a half ago. Roy said you just don’t see that many guys that size at that age with that stuff with that command. That combination of four things, you just don’t see very often. You might see two of the four, you might see three of the four, but to see all four things in that package is really rare. That’s not typical. And it’s different even in some of the guys, the big, strong right-handed power pitchers who have come out of there didn’t have all of those elements.”
Amazing…
I’m already convinced that Syndergaard was the jewel of the R.A. Dickey trade, but I can’t shake the feeling that he also will become the best of our three young starters and the eventual ace of a very young and elite staff.
That’s just me being a fan, but no matter how it eventually turns out, I’m just glad we have all three of them. I’m excited for the time when this talented trio is pitching in a big weekend series against the Braves or Phillies or Yankees. That will be totally awesome…
