A source told Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, “Do not expect any comparable multi-year deals this offseason for players under the Mets’ control.”
By comparable, it’s a reference to the 5-year deal Jon Niese signed with the Mets before the 2012 season.
Rubin indicates that the best candidates for such a deal would be arbitration eligible players; Daniel Murphy, Dillon Gee and Bobby Parnell.
Both Murphy and Parnell are under the team’s control through the 2015 season, while Gee is under control through the 2016 season.
A team insider also told Rubin that while it would appear more likely he returns to the team next season, “the Mets do plan to listen to any trade offers on Daniel Murphy.”
Well, so much for my theory of trying to sign the Mets second baseman to a 2-year deal. If he duplicates what he did this season in 2014, Murphy could be looking at a $10 million payday.
As for next season, I project a $5-6 million settlement for Murphy and the Mets.
