storen drew chokes

After last season’s second half debacle, the Nationals are expected to have a new closer in 2016. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports is reporting that both Jonathan Papelbon and Drew Storen are likely to be traded as Washington looks to make major changes to its bullpen.

Papelbon, who was acquired from the Phillies in a deadline deal, had a 3.04 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 23.2 innings this year for the Nationals. However, he created intense problems in the clubhouse, which escalated to a fight with teammate Bryce Harper in the dugout.

Meanwhile, Drew Storen posted a solid 3.44 ERA in 55 innings, but he struggled mightily after moving to the set up role. He had a 5.82 ERA following the All-Star break, and blew several crucial leads down the stretch.

The Nationals are one of many teams who are interested in free agent reliever Darren O’Day. O’Day had an excellent 1.52 ERA this year with Baltimore, and he is seeking a four-year deal worth $28-$36 million.

Rosenthal also mentions that Washington is one of the teams trying to land All- Star closer Aroldis Chapman from the Reds. Rosenthal says that that their interest isn’t a surprise as General Manager Mike Rizzo has been connected to Chapman for years.

The Nationals were one of the main team’s pursing him when he came out of Cuba in 2010, and they attempted to acquire him at the trading deadline over the summer.

Chapman has averaged 36 saves a season over the past four years, and he is arguably the best closer in baseball.  In 2015, he had an impressive 1.63 ERA to go along with an incredible 15.7 K/9  in 66.1 innings pitched.
