Brandon Nimmo got the opportunity lead off for the New York Mets in his first ever major league Opening Day on Thursday against the St. Louis Cardinals and he didn’t disappoint.
The young center fielder went 2 for 3 with a walk, hit by pitch and scored two of the Mets nine runs in their 9-4 Opening Day victory. Nimmo started right where he left off last season when he finished with a .379 OBP for the Mets in 2017. He would score the Mets first run on the season in the first inning after a throwing error.
As always Nimmo did his damage with a smile, “That first inning was pretty incredible for me. The hair on the back of my neck was standing up. It was awesome. Crossing the plate, the crowd erupted.”
The only out Nimmo made on the day is when he jumped on a first pitch fastball that he hit sharply to left center field that Cardinals outfielder Tommy Pham was able to get to.
With the return of Michael Conforto looming, the question becomes how much playing time will Nimmo be able to find?
