michael Conforto

Adam Rubin of ESPN NY reports that outfielders Brandon Nimmo and Michael Conforto will represent the Mets in the futures game during the All-Star weekend. They will play for team USA.

Both players are first round drafts picks, and they are considered top 100 prospects by sites like Baseball America and MLB.com.

Conforto is hitting .302 this year with nine home runs in 69 games. Since getting called up to Double-A, he’s been even better with a .345 average and a 1.010 OPS in 84 At-bats.

Keith Hernandez recently called Conforto a professional hitter, who has a great swing.

“This kid Conforto … he’s torn up Brooklyn. This year he got elevated, was killing the Florida State league in St. Lucie. Now he’s in Binghamton, Double-A, he’s hitting .370.”

“I saw him in spring. He’s got a great swing.” (CBS Local.com)

Due to Conforto’s success, a lot of people are starting to overlook Nimmo. This is unfortunate because Nimmo is a solid prospect in his own right, and he’s been tremendous ever since returning from the disabled list with a knee injury.  He’s batting .433 in his last seven games, and he has increased his average to .321 for the year.

With the Mets’ lineup struggling to produce,  it’s encouraging to see that help isn’t too far away. However, they both still need a little more time and experience in the minors before they are truly ready.
