kirk walkoff

Las Vegas (42-32) 20, Salt Lake 8

Where do I begin? Welcome to PCL madness where two teams can combine for 28 runs on 34 hits, 9 walks, 5 homeruns, 5 HBP, and still managed to strike out 19 times. Last night the Las Vegas 51’s scored more runs in one game than the New York Mets have in their last 10 combined (19 runs).

In a game that featured three 6-run innings Dillon Gee made his first start since being demoted and was spotted a 10-0 lead in the 2nd inning. Gee struck out the side in the first and only allowed one runner to reach before imploding in the 4th inning when he gave up two homeruns two doubles, and six runs. Gee finished his 5 innings to get the win allowing six runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out six batters. Cody Satterwhite pitched 3 innings giving up one run and striking out three, his ERA is 2.51 over his last 10 appearances that span 14.1 innings. Catcher Dan Rohlfing pitched the 9th inning for the 51’s giving up only one run. In a game that featured this many runs who would have guessed the only position player to pitch would be on the winning team.

I will not be able to post all the crazy offensive numbers here because I don’t what to stretch this thing out, give the box score a look its pretty entertaining. The big offensive story was Kirk Nieuwenhuis who went 2-4 with two walks, four runs scored, five RBI, blasted two homeruns, stole a base, and got hit by a pitch for good measure. In 8 games for the 51’s Kirk has gone 13-32 with five homeruns, thirteen RBI, and ten runs while striking out only four times.

Travis Taijeron was 2-5 with a walk, two runs scored, five RBI, and his 13th homerun of the year which is tied for the 4th most in the PCL. Alex Castellanos was 3-6 with a walk, three runs scored, two RBI, and his league leading 24th double of the year. Brandon Allen was 5-6 with a walk, two RBI, two runs scored, two doubles and is hitting .472 with 9 RBI over his last 10 games. Matt Reynolds was the only Las Vegas hitter who didn’t have multiple hit going 1-5 with a HBP, scored two runs and knocked in his 43 run of the year that ties him for 10th in the league with teammate Castellanos. Box Score

Las Vegas plays tonight with Matt Bowman (4-8, 6.19) squaring off against the veteran Jake Peavy who is on a rehab assignment at 10:05 ET at Cashman Field.

Harrisburg 2, Binghamton (37-34) 1

Brandon Nimmo came up with the two-out clutch hit in the bottom of the 8th but Michael Conforto was thrown out at home as the tying run trying to score from 2nd base on the sharp single. The B’Mets got the tying run on in the 9th with a one-out single by Eudy Pina but Alberto Cordero and pinch hitter Aderlin Rodriguez both struck out to end the game. Harrisburg scored both of their runs in the 1st inning and mustered just three hits in the last 8 innings.

Robert Gsellman made his 5th start for Binghamton pitching his 4th straight quality start going 6 innings giving up two runs on six hits (four in 1st), three walks, and five strikeouts. The damage could have been worse in the first inning if not for Michael Conforto throwing out a runner trying to score at home. Gsellman fell to 1-4 for the B’Mets but lowered his ERA to 4.34 while walking 11 in 29 innings after walking the same amount in 51 innings for St. Lucie earlier in the year. Jon Velasquez threw two perfect innings with three strikeouts in his return from AAA.

Nimmo had two more hits last night including his 10th double while also scoring the only Binghamton run of the night. Here is video of the double. Nimmo extended his AA hitting streak to 14 games and is now hitting .321/.382/.440 on the year. The aforementioned Pina was 3-4 on the night dirving in the only run, he is hitting .308 with eight RBI over his last ten games. Michael Conforto finally got his first hit on the series with a single in the 8th inning, he also walked on the night. His recent hiccup has seen his slash line dip to a mortal .345/.450/.560 in Binghamton. L.J. Mazzilli was 1-3 with a walk while Gavin Cecchini went 0-4 lowering his average to .290. Box Score

Seth Lugo (2-4, 4.15) gets the start as Binghamton host Harrisburg again at 7:05 tonight.

Bradenton 4, St. Lucie (35-36) 3

The St. Lucie Mets had the right guy at the plate with the tying run on 3rd with two outs in the bottom of the 9th but Dominic Smith flew out to end the game. Daniel Murphy continued his rehab assignment playing 3rd base for 7 innings while going 0-3 with a walk at the plate. The Mets had a 2-0 lead going into the 7th inning before Miller Diaz snapped giving up four runs and the lead. St. Lucie had plenty of scoring opportunities but were 1-8 with runners in scoring position stranding ten runners.

Diaz ended up going 6.2 innings giving up four runs on nine hits with four strikeouts but did only walk one which has been an issue having walked five in three of his last four starts. Newly promoted left handed reliever and SAL All-Star David Roseboom made his St. Lucie debut going 2.1 scoreless innings while stranding an inherited runner. Roseboom was 3-0 with eight saves and a 1.07 ERA while allowing only 17 hits in 31.1 innings for Savannah.

Matt Oberste led the way with three hits and knocked in a run for his 30th RBI of the year, he is now hitting .286/.347/.422 on the year. Jeff McNeil was 1-3 with two walks and two stolen bases while still leading the league in hitting at .327. Dominic Smith was 1-4 with a walk and a run scored, he is hitting .386 with 10 RBI over his last ten games. Amed Rosario had his 7-game hitting streak snapped but did walk, score a run, and drive in his 18th run with a sacrifice fly. Box Score

The Sand Gnats offense was quiet collecting only six hits with Vicente Lupo having two of those including his 3rd homerun (two-run shot) and his 10th double of the year. Wuilmer Becerra was 1-4 in his first game after being an All-Star snub. Luis Guillorme reached base twice with a single and a walk, average up to .305 on the year. Eudor Garcia and Jonathan Johnson combined to go 0-7 on the night. Box Score

Badamo walked only one and threw 94 pitches with 67 of them going for strikes. The Mets 2015 7th round pick Corey Taylor needed just 9 pitches (8 strikes) to throw a perfect 9th inning with one strikeout, now has two scoreless innings in pro debut.
