The New York Mets came back from a three run deficit in the ninth to beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3 after a dramatic walk-off three run blast by Kirk Nieuwenhuis.
Things didn’t start off so good for the Mets as poor Jeremy Hefner was once again the victim of shoddy defense (2 errors) and no run support – a recurring theme now for the 27-year-old righthander. Hefner allowed just one earned run in the first and scattered six hits before being pulled for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the fifth. He struck out five and walked one in 5.0 innings, and lowered his ERA to 3.95 for the season – second only to Matt Harvey in the rotation.
What a comedy of errors for the Mets in the fifth as a David Wright throwing error followed by a Daniel Murphy throwing error allowed tw unearned runs to score. I though Terry Collins was going to puke – he looked pretty nauseous to me.
Carlos Torres made his Mets debut with two sharp innings in relief of Hefner, and David Aardsma followed up with a 1-2-3 eighth. Bobby Parnell pitched a perfect ninth and got the surprise win.
The Mets were just invisible on offense today against Matt Garza who absolutely owned them. The veteran righthander kept backing them off the plate throughout the entire game, pitching them inside and then getting them out on the outside corner. In seven innings he held the Mets to just three hits.
Here come the Mets…
With the Mets down to their last three outs, ol’ reliable Marlon Byrd, led off the ninth with his 11th home run of the season off reliever Carlos Marmol to get things started. A rattled Marmol then walked Lucas Duda and allowed a John Buck single to put the tying runs on base with nobody out.
After a successful bunt by Omar Quintanilla, up came the slumping Kirk Nieuwenhuis and BAM! Kirk crushes a slider over the right field wall and into the Pepsi Porch for a dramatic walk-off home run and an exciting 4-3 Father’s Day victory for the Mets… Wow!

So the Mets were able to salvage the final game and avoid the sweep. Now they head to Atlanta for a big five game series that will have Dillon Gee starting things off on Monday night at 7:05 PM followed by Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler on Super Tuesday.
