Despite the injury bug hitting the New York Mets (19-16) this past weekend, they were able to patch an impressive win together beating the (19-22) Atlanta Braves 3-1 at Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia. After two key position players were put on the injured list today, there were moves made to the roster.  Michael Conforto and  Jeff McNeil were placed on the injured list which led to two minor league transactions. Johneshwy Fargas was selected from Syracuse Triple-A and made his major league debut in the starting lineup playing CF. Khalil Lee was recalled up as well to fill in for a roster spot.

On the injury front, two more potential candidates for the injured list were taken out of the game. Taijuan Walker was pulled complaining about left side tightness. Kevin Pillar was also taken out of the game due to a scary hit by pitch. We all hope that his injuries heal quickly.

Walker made his seventh start tonight against the division rivals Atlanta Braves. Coming into the night he has a 3-1 record with a 2.20 earned run average. Walker was cruising at the beginning of the game managing to produce weak contact off the Braves bats, allowing only one hit in three scoreless innings.

Unfortunately, Walker was all of a sudden taken out of the game by Luis Rojas due to an injury. An inning later it was reported that Walker was experiencing left side tightness.

Sean Reid-Foley quickly warmed up for the top of the fourth inning. He was the next pitcher out of the bullpen to replace Walker. Foley was brilliant in his relief outing hurling three scoreless innings. He struck out five through his first eight batters. James McCann came in as a pinch hitter for Reid-Foley in the seventh, indicating that it was the end of his outing.

Jeurys Familia was lights out of the bullpen pitching a scoreless seventh. He struck out one batter and brought his earned run average down to 2.84.

Trevor May was the setup man in the 8th inning. His performance was a little shaky, allowing one earned run giving up a home run to Austin Riley.

Edwin Diaz came in for the closing situation facing the top of the Braves batting order in the 9th. Diaz got his sixth save of the year, the only blemish was giving up a 1-out walk to Freddie Freeman

The Mets offense managed nine hits on Monday.

New York faced the young left-hander Max Fried for the first time this season. It was a pitching duel in Atlanta as both lineups were overmatched by the outstanding pitching from both sides.

The Mets finally got to Fried in the seventh inning as he allowed a leadoff double to Tomas Nido. Fried couldn’t finish out the top of the frame due to being pulled out for a potential injury. Jacob Webb was called out of the Braves bullpen to face pinch hitter James McCann with Nido in scoring position. McCann has been struggling offensively at the plate. This was a great opportunity for him to get his bat going. McCann laced a clutch double over the third baseman’s head to drive in Nido for the game’s first run.  Fargas was the next batter, he bunted McCann over to the third on a sacrifice. After a Francisco Lindor walk, that put runners at first and third, Dominic Smith was intentionally walked to load the bases for Pillar.

Webb was the opposing pitcher on the mound. Pillar had a horrifying turn at-bat with the bases loaded, getting struck in the face. The game was halted for several minutes as a somber mood transcended over Truist Park. Pillar went down immediately with his face down to the ground, pouring blood coming out. He was able to get up on his own and walk back to the dugout down to the clubhouse so that was a positive sign out of the whole situation.

Khalil Lee came in the game for Pillar to make his major league debut as a pinch-runner at first base. He stayed in the game defensively to play RF. The Mets finished the inning off scoring two runs to take the lead.

Top of the 8th, the Mets added some insurance,  Fargas collected his first major league hit, an RBI doubling into right field getting past the right fielder Ronald Acuna, Jr. adding another run making it 3-0.

The Mets go for their second straight against the Atlanta Braves tomorrow night beginning at a 7:20. There is no scheduled starting pitcher for the Mets in the second game of this series yet but it is most likely Drew Smith will start as an opener again like he did last weekend against the Tampa Bay Rays.

On the other side of the diamond, rookie left-hander, Tucker Davidson will be called up from the Braves Triple-A Gwinett affiliate to make the scheduled start. In two starts he’s pitched to a 0.64 ERA. This will most likely be an audition to be a permanent fixture in the Braves rotation.

The game will be televised on SNY and broadcast on WCBS 880-AM.
