One of the more heartwarming days of the year is when the North Shore Animal League brings puppies to Citi Field as part of their efforts to get people to adopt a puppy. Players and reporters alike visit and play with the puppies before the game. For his part, Jeff McNeil fell in love with one, and would FaceTime his wife from the field to convince her the couple should adopt one puppy in particular.

In an effort to get his wife to agree to adopt the puppy, McNeil would hit a third inning three-run homer. Notably, the flight of the ball carried over the general area where he met his new best friend.

After the game, McNeil admitted the puppy was on his mind as he rounded the bases, and he had some hope the adoption would take place saying, “we’re going to go see the puppy again tomorrow. We’ll talk. But I think hitting a home run after holding a puppy gives me a little bargain chip. If my wife wants more homers, then we may have to get a puppy.”

This is yet another example of just how likable this Mets core of young players are. It’s also a reminder of how good a player Jeff McNeil is, and the importance of adopting animals from a shelter. In the event it helps McNeil get that puppy, we are going to name this the Neon Moment of the Week!
