The New York Mets have not had the best history bringing in potential Hall of Famers who are towards the end of their careers. Over Mets history, fans can recite how things fell apart for players like Roberto Alomar, Warren Spahn, Eddie Murray, and a host of other players when they donned the orange and blue.
However, that is not the totality of that list. There are still players like Rickey Henderson, who came to the Mets and proved to be difference makers on teams that went to the postseason. Like Henderson, Robinson Cano is a former Yankees player who appears poised to make a huge impact on a Mets postseason team.
Right off the bat (pun intended), Cano would ingratiate himself to Mets fans. After a year in which, Jacob deGrom received little to no run support, Cano would provide deGrom with a lead before he threw even one pitch during the 2019 season by hitting an opposite-field home run off of Max Scherzer.
Cano wasn’t done there either. In the third, when deGrom was in trouble with runners at the corners with one out, Cano would make a savvy veteran play. The hopper hit by Anthony Rendon to third was not going to permit the Mets to turn the conventional double play.
However, the Mets would turn the double play because Cano caught Nationals rookie Victor Robles trying to sneak home on the play. Cano delivered a strike to Wilson Ramos, which led to Robles getting caught in the rundown and ending the inning. Considering Scherzer was dealing and the run support deGrom received all of last year, the importance of that play cannot be understated.
Cano still wasn’t done. In the eighth inning, Cano came up with runners at first and second with two outs, and Nationals Manager Dave Martinez would go to the lefty, Matt Grace. Cano was undaunted, though, delivering an RBI single expanding the Mets led to 2-0.
On the day, the Mets would only have five hits and they would strike out 12 times. Cano was 2-for-4 with a homer and an RBI. Other than the two starters, he was clearly the best position player on the field and he was the difference maker for the Mets in the game. That’s exactly the way you want to ingratiate yourself to Mets fans, and it is why Cano’s performance was the Mets Neon Moment of the Week.
