The New York Mets lost their second straight against the Washington Nationals by the score of 4-1 this afternoon in our nation’s capital.
Dillon Gee started and was charged with all four runs that scored on two solo home runs by Ian Desmond and Denard Span, and a two-run shot by Bryce Harper. Gee, who had been pitching great, wasn’t so lucky today. He only allowed six hits and walked none, but three of those hits did all the damage and he took the loss and fell to 7-8 on the season. Josh Edgin and Scott Atchison combined to pitch a scoreless eighth.
Offensively, the Mets fell flat again, scoring just one run in the sixth on an RBI-single by David Wright to score Eric Young who has singled ahead of him. The Mets only had two other hits in the game.
Marlon Byrd, Ike Davis and John Buck batted 4-5-6 and went 0-for-10 with five strikeouts, two by David who is batting .173 now.
There was a one hour rain delay in the bottom of the eighth that dragged out the agony longer than was necessary, but it gave me a chance to listen to my Beatles and Zeppelin playlist so it wasn’t a total loss.
I guess the worst part of this game was that it was Dan Haren who manhandled the Mets and we all know how bad he is.
Oh well, tomorrow’s another day as Carlos Torres (1-1, 0.94 ERA) opposes right-hander Taylor Jordan (0-3, 3.68) in a 1:35 PM start.
