The New York Mets appear to finally be closing in on a new General Manager. While no offer has officially been made yet, according to the NY Post, Adam Cromie met face-to-face with Mets owner Steve Cohen on Wednesday afternoon.

Cromie reportedly already had met with Cohen and Mets Team President Sandy Alderson via teleconference. The face-to-face meeting was the next step in the process, and if all went well the expectation is an offer would be made to Cromie.

With Cromie being out of baseball since 2017, Mets fans may not know much about him. One person that certainly knows him particularly well is current Washington Nationals President of Baseball Operations Mike Rizzo.

Rizzo took some time on Wednesday afternoon at the GM Meetings to tell reporters a little bit about Cromie as both a worker and a person.

“He’s an intelligent person. He attacked every responsibility that we gave him. Intelligence, loyalty, and he’s a good guy with good people skills. Just a good person from a good family. A smart guy, he’s a good guy to work with,” Rizzo said

Cromie worked in many different roles with Rizzo and the Nationals from 2007-2017, before ultimately leaving the game of baseball to pursue his second childhood dream of becoming a lawyer.

Over the years he spent time working with the player development department, analytics department, and baseball operations. He was promoted three different times, being named the director of baseball operations, vice president, and then the assistant general manager in 2014.

As the assistant GM, Rizzo said Cromie mainly handled rules and arbitration stuff, as well as roster placements.

Cromie left the Nationals and baseball in 2017 to work at the Jones Day law firm. Since then, according to his company page, Cromie has worked on mergers and acquisitions. He’s also helped teams in arbitration hearings over the years.

“It’s going to be a big job for him, a big jump. He was capable at every level that he worked for us. I think this is a natural progression for him, in a very unique way to get this,” Rizzo added.
