Daniel Murphy went 3-for-4 with a double and a walk in a minor league game at Tradition Field on Friday. Murphy played second base on Thursday in a minor league game as well and had a home run and a sac fly in five at-bats.

Murphy is expected to join the Mets in Washington, and manager Terry Collins is expecting him to be in the Opening Day lineup at D.C. against the Nationals.

According to a report by Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, the New York Mets now expect Daniel Murphy will be starting at second base on Opening Day, on Monday against the Washington Nationals in D.C.

“At the trainer’s recommendation after playing four straight days on the minor league side as he works back from a pulled right hamstring, Murphy is off Thursday. He is expected to remain in Florida with the Mets breaking camp and continue playing in minor league games this weekend. That way, should Murphy need a season-opening DL stint, the Mets could backdate that assignment and Murphy would miss only the first six days of the regular season.”

This most likely renders the debate between Matt Reynolds and Daniel Muno moot as both will likely start the season at Triple-A Las Vegas if Murphy is ready to go.

“We think he’s going to be ready,” manager Terry Collins told ESPN.com.
