Infielder Daniel Murphy could return to the starting lineup on Monday when the NL East leading Mets open up a crucial three game series against the second place Nationals in DC.

As for outfielder Michael Cuddyer, the Mets are not sure yet as he continues to receive further treatment on his ailing right wrist.

Murphy has been dealing with a mild strain of his left quadriceps muscle. He suffered the injury during Wednesday’s game vs the Phillies and missed the first two games against the Marlins this weekend.

However, Murphy pinch hit in Sunday’s game and grounded into a double play. After the game, manager Terry Collins told reporters that Murphy will likely return to the lineup on Monday.

Cuddyer also hasn’t started since Wednesday. He’s been dealing with a sore right wrist for over a week and was finally diagnosed with tendinitis by doctors on Friday and placed in a splint.

On Sunday, Cuddyer received a cortisone shot which could put him out of action for at least one more day and maybe two.

The Mets head into their series against the Nationals with a trimmed down four game lead after losing two of three against the Marlins.
