dilson herrera homers

I detest ignorance. And when I see Mets fans and media hearkening to and longing for the faulty policies and impulsive decision-making that set this Mets franchise back for nearly a decade culminating in six consecutive losing seasons, it’s pure unadulterated ignorance at the highest level. It makes my blood boil.

This morning I came across this gem…

“I’m not fully convinced Herrera will be the starting second baseman Opening Day 2017. Why? I believe the Mets are all-in on 2016, and will seriously consider dealing him this summer for a key piece. If they don’t, then he’s their guy. But, if a deal presents itself that helps this year’s club in a meaningful way, and he’s the ask, I think the Mets will at least consider it. They have to. If Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Steven Matz, Noah Syndergaard, Wheeler and Jeurys Familia are healthy and pitching well, now is the time to go for it. And, if that means dealing Herrera, so be it. Who knows, maybe the Mets can re-sign Walker? Or, maybe another option presents itself. The chance to win a World Series doesn’t come around often, let alone two years in a row.”  ~  Matt Cerrone, SNY.tv/MetsNews

Amazing… It was this exact kind of irrational, knee-jerk and shortsighted thinking that reigned supreme during the fall of the Omar Minaya empire.

Going all-in – and in most cases ridiculously all-in – at the expense of the future, is the last thing this team needs right now!

This is what led to all those God-awful contracts that put a stranglehold on the franchise and then took years to get rid of once sanity came to town, and Sandy Alderson took over the organization and slowly rebuilt the team from the rot and decay he inherited.

Yes, lets go back to those decrepit days when the Mets were an absolute joke and an utter embarrassment. Great freaking idea….

So lets trade away the most exciting middle infield prospect since Jose Reyes for a rental to keep the Mets in the hunt.

And then lets double down on this insanity by giving Neil Walker a second generation contract that will pay him at least $75-90 million dollars through his age 34 or 35 season.

Wow, someone really needs to take his head out of the sand on this one – and that’s putting it kindly.

Luckily, I’m quite certain that Sandy Alderson is not the half-baked potato some would prefer him to be.

In Sandy’s world, he looks at the big picture.

In Sandy’s world he sees Neil Walker netting the Mets a first round draft pick in 2017, while the Mets usher in the Dilson Herrera era at second base and continue to maintain a playoff caliber team that uses it’s minor league system to fuel it.

So while some of the outrageous ideas being propagated by an ignorant and shortsighted media may want me to scream holy hell…

At the end of the day I’m confident that we have a leader in the front office with a clear, coherent and sound vision who is committed to maintaining a bright and lasting future in Flushing.

Thank God for that.
