Jon Heyman of MLB Network has announced that the MLB and the MLBPA will resume their discussion regarding potential scenarios for the season to begin as early as July. This is still contingent on the virus and the availability of testing. Regular divisions are still on the table, and the goal is for teams to play at their home parks, where possible.

Heyman continued on to rattle off some ideas that are very likely to be tested out in this shortened season: limited travel, more doubleheader’s, less days off, and expanded rosters, etc.

Jeff Passan of ESPN reported that the 2020 MLB draft will still be held but will differ from years previous. The draft will be only five rounds and players who go undrafted will be eligible to sign for a maximum of $20,000. The draft will be held on June 10.

Passan explained that the proposal for a 10-round draft was turned down as the two sides could not come to an agreement. Many front offices were hoping for a longer draft, as there might be hidden “gems” of players still in the mix during the later rounds. The 10-round draft was proposed as two five-round drafts, where teams could not use slot money from rounds 6-10 to pay those in the first five rounds; this proposal also limited the amount of undrafted players that teams could sign.
