1973 – The Mets celebrated Willie Mays Night at Shea Stadium as the Hall of Famer was getting ready to hang up his spikes after a legendary career.
Mays said, “Just to hear you cheer like this for me and not be able to do anything about it makes me a very sad man. This is my farewell”
2003 – Bob Murphy Appreciation Night is held at Shea in honor of the Hall of Fame broadcaster’s final game in the booth. He called over 6,000 in his storied career.
2009 – David Wright starts in his 836th game at third base for the Mets, setting a new franchise record. Howard Johnson held the record previously.
