Good morning, Mets fans!

The Red Sox have inked flamethrower Aroldis Chapman to a one-year extension, as first reported by Francys Romero of BeisbolFR. Chris Cotillo of MassLive reports the deal is worth $13.3 million and includes a 2027 option that vests based on Chapman’s total innings pitched. The option could bring the deal’s total to two years and $27 million.

Chapman has thrived in 2025 at the ripe age of 37, posting a 1.04 ERA and 0.673 WHIP while earning his eighth All-Star nod. He’s also issued walks to just 7.3% of hitters, the lowest rate of his career and a sharp improvement from 2024, when he walked 14.7%.

NL Standings Update

The Phillies defeated the Braves 3-2 in a hard-fought extra-innings game. Despite striking out 15 times against Atlanta’s pitching, Philadelphia got a gem from Cristopher Sánchez. In the bottom of the 10th, the Phillies rallied for two runs, capped by a walk-off single from Trea Turner. Their win and the Mets’ loss moves the Mets to six games back in the division race.

Cincinnati fell 4-2 to the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday, dropping to 68-68 and five games back in the NL Wild Card race. The win moves St. Louis to 68-69, boosting them within five and a half games of the Wild Card.

Latest Mets News

The Mets’ comeback attempt fell short Saturday, as New York lost 11-8 to the Marlins. David Peterson struggled through two innings, giving up eight earned runs on eight hits with three walks. Veteran Chris Devenski followed with three scoreless, no-hit innings to keep the Mets in the game. Francisco Lindor, Mark Vientos and Juan Soto each homered, but it wasn’t enough to overcome an 8-2 deficit, which the Mets briefly erased to tie the game 8-8 in the sixth.

Today, the Mets face the Marlins, looking to split the series. Kodai Senga (7-5, 2.73 ERA) takes the mound against former Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara (7-11, 5.87 ERA). The matinee starts at 1:10 p.m. ET and will air on WPIX.

On Saturday, the Mets recalled Devenski from Triple-A Syracuse and designated left-hander José Castillo for assignment. Castillo had thrown two innings on Friday, making the move somewhat expected.

There was plenty of action in Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday. Francisco Alvarez started as the designated hitter, finishing 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. On the mound, Brandon Sproat delivered seven scoreless innings in a dominant outing.
