Jon Morosi of MLB Network reported Monday night that the Orioles and Diamondbacks are among the teams inquiring with the Angels about Shohei Ohtani. Morosi adds that both clubs’ interest level is perceived as doing due diligence, but both clubs have the young talent that can make a deal possible. As of right now, the Angels are four games back of a playoff spot and have six of their last eight games.

The Mets and Yankees begin round two of the Subway Series tonight, with Justin Verlander (4-5, 3.47 ERA) facing off against Domingo Germán (5-6, 4.52 ERA). Verlander faced the Yankees at Citi Field back on June 14, tossing six innings of one-run ball, earning a no-decision. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Mets pitching prospect Calvin Ziegler is expected to miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn right quad. The right-hander hasn’t pitched this season after getting bone spurs removed back in March. The former second-round pick made his professional debut last year, striking out 70 batters in 46 2/3 innings.

The Pirates have told clubs that they will listen to offers for All-Star pitchers David Bednar and Mitch Keller. Bednar is under team control until 2027 and has a sparkling 1.15 ERA and has allowed just nine walks and one home run with 47 strikeouts in 39 innings this year. Keller meanwhile is under club control until 2026, and while he’s struggled as of late, he still has a solid 4.01 ERA/3.80 FIP with 137 strikeouts in 128 innings this year.

The Guardians have shifted right-hander Shane Bieber to the 60-day injured list. The earliest he can come back now is September 10.

The Padres have released second baseman Rougned Odor. The former Ranger hit .210/.306/.376 with four homers in 138 at-bats this season.

Alex Kiriloff and Austin Riley were named AL and NL Players of the Week. Kiriloff hit .345 with three homers and 10 RBIs, while Riley cranked six homers and drove in 16 runs.

The Braves acquired right-hander Pierce Johnson from the Rockies and southpaw Taylor Hearn from the Rangers. Johnson served as the Rockies’ closer to start the year, racking up 13 saves and while he has a 6.00 ERA, he’s struck out 58 batters in 39 innings (13.4 K/9). Hearn meanwhile has allowed eight earned runs in seven innings for Texas this year. Both players have minor-league options remaining.

The Reds have told teams they’re willing to trade Jonathan India to acquire young, controllable starting pitchers. The 2021 NL Rookie of the Year has hit .251/.338/.411 (98 OPS+) in 2023 with 14 homers, 19 doubles, and 12 steals in 441 plate appearances.

Reigning KBO MVP Lee Jung-hoo will miss the next three months of action due to an ankle injury that requires surgery. Lee has hit .319/.407/.456 with six homers and 23 doubles in 386 plate appearances this season.

1990: At Veterans Stadium, the Mets take a 10-3 lead into the ninth inning, but the Phillies rally to score six runs in the bottom of the ninth inning against Wally Whitehurst and Julio Machado. John Franco walks the first man he faces but gets Lenny Dykstra to ground into a double play and Tom Herr to line out to shortstop Mario Díaz to end the game. After the final out is recorded, Bob Murphy exclaims, “The Mets win it, they win the damn thing by a score of 10-9!” Dave Magadan and Darryl Strawberry both homer in the winning effort.

2001: The Mets leave a franchise record 16 men on base, but escape with a 5-2 win over the Marlins in Miami. Joe McEwing collects three hits and two RBIs, and Glendon Rusch allows just one run in 5 2/3 innings to get the win.

2015: Michael Conforto collects the first four hits of his major league career as the Mets trounce the Dodgers, 15-2. Kirk Nieuwenhuis goes 4-for-4 with four RBIs, Kelly Johnson hits his first home run as a Met, Daniel Murphy homers and drives in three, and Lucas Duda goes deep twice. Matt Harvey allows just two runs in seven innings and collects two hits and two RBIs of his own.
