Speaking to the media at the Winter Meetings, Carlos Mendoza said that Edwin Díaz is fully healthy and going through his offseason plans. Mendoza also mentioned that the Mets will have a plan for ramping Díaz up after missing the entirety of the 2023 season.

Both Mendoza and David Stearns expressed their confidence in the Mets’ in-house options at third base. Stearns said that the team is not actively exploring the market at the hot corner. When asked about the designated hitter position, Mendoza said he isn’t sure who will get most of those at-bats.

Stearns told reporters Monday that he is targeting an outfielder, at least one starting pitcher, and bullpen arms. Stearns said he’s specifically looking for an outfielder who can “take significant playing time.” The Mets have recently been connected to outfielders Jung Hoo Lee and Michael A. Taylor.

In a survey conducted by The Athletic, 14 of 16 agents polled said they believe Stearns’ success in Milwaukee will translate in New York.

“He’s smart and genuine,” one agent said. “He’s a good evaluator and communicator and both of those things will transfer well into different markets.”

The Mets and White Sox are the finalists for right-hander Erick Fedde, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reported on Monday night. Feinsand says that a deal is expected to be completed Tuesday and will likely be around two years and $10 million. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that Yoshinobu Yamamoto is the Mets’ top target for their starting rotation, though reigning NL Cy Young award winner Blake Snell could be a possible fallback. Heyman also notes that the Cubs have turned their attention to Rhys Hoskins since there’s a very low chance Pete Alonso gets moved.

The Mets officially announced the rest of their coaching staff behind Mendoza. Eric Chavez, Jeremy Barnes, Jeremy Hefner, Danny Barnes, and Glenn Sherlock remain from Buck Showalter‘s staff, while John Gibbons, Antoan Richardson, Jose Rosado, and Mike Sarbaugh are the newcomers.

Jay Horwitz wrote that Dwight Gooden is using this holiday season to give back. Gooden is looking to reach out to young kids to tell his story about learning from the mistakes he made. Last week, Gooden went to a middle school and high school in New Jersey, and he hopes to visit more schools before the end of the year.
